Paper Bag Skirt Tutorial
Ok let me first start off by saying how crazy i am about {Paper-Bag Skirts}. How
adorable are these? I just can't say enough about em. They are not only sweet but feminine
and just about anyone can wear one. I love sewing for my two girls, and when i first
started sewing, I didn't start off with the easiest sewing project. I started with a dress
and boy was i in over my head. luckily i had a book to teach me what i was doing wrong
and how to fix it. So if you have a basic knowledge of sewing, you can totally rock this project.
{Pom-Pom Skirt Tutorial}
Supplies
*1/2-3/4 yard of fabric (sizes 4 and Under)
*1/2 -2 yards of fabric (sizes 4 and up)
* 1 yard 1'' White Elastic (non-roll)
*Thread
*1-1/2 yards of pom- pom trim
Instructions
1. Measure your child's waist and or measure skirts that she wears. My 2 1/2 plus, almost three year old
has a 20'' waist and her usual skirts measures at 11'' in length sometimes a little longer.
Waste- Take your Childs waist measurement and divide by 2 then add 5'' {can add more for a little loser fit} Exa: 20/2=10 +5'' = 15 waist measurement
Length- My Daughter's skirts usually are 11'' in length so I kept that measurement and added 5'' Exa: 11+5= 16 You will need the extra for the extra at the top.
Cut 2 Pieces of Fabric to the measurements you got after you added the 5'' for the width and length for your child. I cut two pieces of fabric 15'' wide {waste} by 16'' long {Length} Then with right sides together, sew sides seams together using 1/4'' seam allowance
I didn't get any pictures for each step, but if you have a basic knowledge of sewing, you should
be able to follow the directions with no problem. or you can go to this step by step picture tutorial
i found. http://www.craftaholicsanonymous.net/candy-cane-stripe-and-pom-pom-skirt-tutorial
2. Fold over 2.5'' at the top of skirt and iron. Then sew 1 complete seem 1'' from the fold seam. Sew a second seam 2.25'' from the fold and leave a 3'' Gap, {this will be for the elastic in step 3}
Note- The first seam you sew creates the paper bag waste, the second seam is for the elastic.
3. Cut the elastic to fit your child's waist, I cut mine to 20". Then attach a safety pin and thread through the elastic casing. Then overlap the elastic about 2" and just sew across the elastic 5-10 times to secure the elastic Then pull the elastic back into the waist band and sew the 3" gap closed.
4. Hem the skirt by folding over 1/4" at the bottom and iron, repeat and top stitch
5. turn the skirt right side out and top stitch the pom pom trim to the bottom of the skirt. Apply Fray Check to the ends of the trim so that it won't fray or unravel at the ends when washed.
And that's it Ladies..in 1 hour you made the cutest skirt imaginable. Now go try it on your little model and take some sweet candids to mark the memory.
